two for John Bultler's three
John Butler
has started work early in June on his next studio album with a
revised Trio line-up. He has named Melbourne drummer Nicky Bomba
and Sydney musician Byron Luiters as his new sidemen proving yet
again Butler's willingness to stretch himself musically. Bomba
is a prolific songwriter, performer and producer in his own right,
and was the main drummer on JBT's five times platinum album 'Sunrise
Over Sea'. Luiters was a member of the Sydney outfit Ray Mann
Three. "Over the last twelve years of the JBT, I have been blessed
with some amazing individuals," Butler said. "All have left their
legacy and have raised the musical bar of the band. With any new
incarnation it has always been an honour and challenge to meet
the benchmark the band has achieved artistically and take it to
the next level. It's great to be playing with Nicky again and
Byron brings a whole new level of melody, funk and Mojo to the
Trio. Very exciting times." Butler, Bomba and Luiters are expected
to continue recording of the as yet titled new album until early
next month. (July 1, 2009)

Sydney's Parklife Festival, on September 27 it will be without
Nick Littlemore. Littlemore has announced he has rejoined his
first band Pnau and band member Peter Mayes in the US. The duo,
who are now based in the UK, expect to release their as yet titled

and couldn't find the energy to do anything. I couldn't move and
I hardly ate," he told The Sun. "The doctor said I was exhausted
physically and mentally. I'm now on a high-protein diet and taking
shakes to build up my strength. I also go on 2km walks every morning

So
long, been good to know you
Australian
music has lost three members of its "family", musician/producers
Russell Dunlop and Ian Miller, and recording artist Maurice Frawley.
Russell
Dunlop first distinguished himself as drummer with late sixties
pop group Aesop's Fables, subsequently taking the drum kit for
Levi Smith's Clefs, SCRA, Renee Geyer's Mother Earth, Cool Bananas,
Johnny Rocco Band and Ayers Rock. In the 70s and 80s he formed
one half of Alberts' other production team. While Vanda and Young
worked in the main studio Russell Dunlop and Bruce Brown, in particular
Mental As Anything, the Machinations and the Reels. He also contributed
to many recordings as a session drummer.
Russell
Dunlop died of a heart attack on May 17 of a suspected heart attack,
a few days after another former record producer, Ian Miller died
at home after a long illness. A guiatarist of note, Miller went
on to produce mid-seventies records for John Paul Young, Stevie
Wright, The Moir Sisters, Lobby Loyde and The Coloured Balls and
Jim Keays. In recent years he had resumed his career as a musician
and recorded two indelendantly released albums.
Maurice
Frawley, a former member of Paul Kelly and The Dots, has died
after a short battle with cancer at Rochester Hospital in rural
Victoria. While working with Paul Kelly he co-wrote 'Look So Fine,
Feel So Low' before joined the Olympic Sideburns and forming the
Working Class Ringos and recording under his own name. (May
18).
Tatts rocked
again
Rose Tattoo
have confirmed that guitarist and founding member Mick Cocks has
been diagnosed with cancer of the liver. Steve White, the group's
manager, said: "Mick has asked that I release this information
to avoid the rumour mill taking control of the information. The
situation is that Mick has been diagnosed with liver cancer and
is now under the advice of the very best doctors in Sydney. Treatment
plans are underway and Mick is in good spirits and ready for a
fight." Cocks is the second member of the band to contract the
disease - guitarist Pete Wells passed away in March 2006 after
losing his long battle with prostate cancer. (April 10)
