Another Stone Alone

Angus Stone released a solo album before the recent second Angus and Julia Stone release ‘Down The Way’. Now it’s Julia’s turn. She’s just wrapped up recording her still-untitled solo effort although working titles include Winter on the Weekend and The Memory Machine, both of which are songs on the album.. Inevitably there’s an overlap between the brother and sister’s work alone and together. The opening song from ‘Down The Way’ ‘Hold On’ is one of two tracks originally intended for Julia’s album. The single from ‘Down The Way’,  ‘Big Jet Plane’ appears without Julia’s voice on Angus’ ‘Lady Of The Sunshine’ project. Julia Stone wrote and recorded the ten songs featured on her album late last year while living in New York. Another solo Julia track ‘This Love’ recently featured on the soundtrack for the film The Waiting City, starring Joel Edgerton and Rhada Mitchell. No release date for Julia Stone’s has been scheduled. Meanwhile Angus and Julia are booked together to play shows in the UK and Europe until December. (July 30)

Gunners manager sues Angels pair

The Angels’ guitar-playing brothers John and Richard Brewster are being sued by former Guns N’ Roses and great White manager Alan Niven, claiming authorship of songs the Brewsters have been performing aside from their Angels’ activities. Niven’s claim in the California Central District Court also asks for the return of two guitars, a Gibson 335 and an American Fender Stratocaster with a maple neck. His association with the Angels goes back to 1988 when he was involved in securing the band an American record release, as Angel City, Then in 2001, according to Niven, after a family breakdown, he recruited Rick Brewster to the US to help him record some songs he had written. It was then agreed that Niven would supply the Brewsters with songs “on spec” This coincides with the time The Angels found themselves without singer Doc Neeson. The Brewsters and the remaining Angels subsequently started performing in their own right as The Angels Band. As the Brewster Brothers they have released two studio albums, presumably involving songs Niven claims involvement in. Niven's lawyer, Eric Bjorgum, said: ''This is not something that Mr Niven took lightly, nor is he happy to be involved in litigation with former associates and friends. We understand the reputation of the Brewsters and their contribution to music. But at some point Mr Niven was entitled to appropriate recognition … He would also like to be able to perform and market his own songs, but a shadow is cast across them now.'' (July 10)

Watch out! Avalanches!

Ten years since the release of the Avalanches' ‘Since I Left You’  the follow-up may finally be on the way. We’d given up hope after the 2006 incident when their record company apparently rejected the album brought to them, and almost immediately retracted that report to say they were happy with what they’d heard so far. The Avalanches have had a good excuse for the delay of course. We’d been told that 3,500 samples had had to be cleared in the making of ‘Since I Left You’. Samples have been even harder to come by legally since then. In May 2009, the Avalanches posted an image on their MySpace page which confirmed that work was in progress -the drawing of a rainbow falling into a dustbin had the brief heading, "Clearing samples". Then nothing more, until this week when the Avalanches' web developer informed us that  "I hear Ariel Pink is recording some guest vocals for it and once those are done, the album will be finished (!).Ariel Pink is a Los Angeles based avant-garde musician Under that MySpace dustbin image, the "samples" comment has disappeared. The plot thickens. (June 11)
